Does a concrete bottom slab have to be present under the pool?

Building a pool is a serious undertaking that requires careful planning and execution. One of the essential structural elements of a pool is the bottom slab, which is located underneath the pool itself. But does it have to be made of concrete with a specified thickness and class? The answer is yes, a concrete bottom slab is necessary and should meet certain construction requirements.

 

The concrete bottom slab serves several important functions in the pool’s structure. Firstly, it provides stability and evenly distributes the loads exerted by the water, which can be significant, especially in larger pools. Without a properly constructed bottom slab, the pool may be prone to structural damage such as cracks or settling.

 

The thickness of the bottom slab is crucial for its strength. It is recommended that the slab has a thickness between 12 and 20 centimeters. However, it’s important to note that the final decision in this matter should be made by a qualified pool designer who takes into account the specific terrain and the size of the pool. For larger pools, especially commercial ones, the thickness of the bottom slab may be greater to ensure proper strength and stability of the structure.

 

The concrete class, which represents the compressive strength of the concrete, is also important in constructing the bottom slab. In this case, it is suggested to use concrete with a class of B20. Concrete of this class has a compressive strength of approximately 20 megapascals (MPa). Such strength is sufficient for most standard pools. For larger or commercial pools, it is recommended to use concrete of a higher class, such as B25 or B30.
