What is shock chlorination and how to carry it out?

Find out what shock chlorination is and how to carry it out! Check out what you need to know about it.

Are you wondering how to take care of clean water in the pool? The priority is to properly clean the pool filter, cover the water surface for the time when you do not use the basin and regularly clean the bottom of the pool and its walls. Clean water is not only an investment in the pleasure of using the pool, but above all in the health of you and your family. What else can you do to ensure a sufficiently high level of hygiene? In some cases, shock chlorination is a necessity. What does it consist of? How to carry them out? We will answer these questions in today’s post.

What is shock chlorination?

Shock chlorination of the pool is a procedure consisting in a very rapid increase in the level of chlorine in the water. It is carried out with the use of dedicated pool chemistry preparations. What for? The key in this case is to achieve higher water quality. Shock chlorination works well if it takes on a green color, which is synonymous with the appearance of algae, dangerous to your health. Shock chlorination in the pool is also indicated if chloramines need to be removed. This activity is recommended for regular performance as one of the elements of caring for pool water. Thanks to it, it is possible to remove bacteria, viruses, mold and fungi. What is important: chlorinating the pool and maintaining the correct level of chlorine in the water is not the same as shock chlorination!

How to carry out shock chlorination in the pool?

How to make chlorination damage to the pool? Remember that for shock chlorination it is necessary to use other means than for the usual chlorination of water. Dedicated preparations are used for this purpose, most often in the form of granules or tablets, which should dissolve very quickly. What’s next?

First: read the recommendations of the manufacturer of chemistry for shock chlorination. Before you proceed to action, carefully read all the manufacturer’s recommendations. Information on the dose of shock chlorination should be given on the product packaging or in the accompanying package leaflet.

Secondly, you need to measure the chlorine level in your pool and check whether the water has the required pH value (7.0 – 7.4). For this purpose, you can use one of the available testers, for example, strip. Available for purchase in pool chemistry stores.

Thirdly: use the right dose of the preparation for shock chlorination. Remember that during this time absolutely no one can use the pool.

At the end of the process, it is necessary to filter the water.

Shock chlorination: how much chlorine is needed?

As we have already mentioned, how much chlorine will be needed is an individual matter, depending on the preparation used. That is why it is so important to carefully read all the manufacturer’s tips and instructions, and in case of any doubts, consult a specialist. You don’t want to or can’t use chlorine? An alternative to shock chlorination will be properly concentrated preparations with active oxygen, which you can easily buy in stores offering pool chemistry.

Shock chlorination: when can you bathe?

You already know how to perform shock chlorination, but remember that both during chlorination and after performing this procedure, you can not use the pool. In practice, when it will be possible to bathe again after shock chlorination depends primarily on the chemicals used and their dose. Usually, a break of at least several hours is necessary, after which a test to check the chlorine content should be performed.

Shock chlorination is one of the answers to the question of how to clean the pool from mold, fungi and other microorganisms that pose a threat to human health. The frequency of use of shock chlorination is an individual matter, but specialists recommend that, for the sake of the quality of the pool water, shock chlorination should be performed regularly.
